Effects of Planets in Different Houses from the Moon (Candra)

Planets in Different Houses from the Moon (Candra)

This article explains the results of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and Rāhu when each transits the twelve houses counted from the natal Moon (Janma rāśi).

How to read “from the Moon” (Candra-lagna)

  1. Find the Moon’s sign in the natal chart. That sign is your Janma rāśi (Moon-sign).
  2. Count houses from the Moon just as you count from the lagna: the Moon’s sign is 1st; the next sign is 2nd; and so on up to the 12th.
  3. Apply the results below to the transiting planet currently moving through each counted house. Traditional texts state these results from the Moon, but they can be applied from the lagna as well.

Benefic Houses and Vedha (Obstruction) Points

Each planet gives especially good (“benefic”) results when transiting certain houses from the Moon. Those good effects may be obstructed (vedha) if another planet simultaneously occupies a specific house. Key rules are summarised below; use them alongside the planet-wise results.

Benefic houses vs. Vedha positions (counted from the Moon)
Planet Benefic houses Vedha positions
Sun (Sūrya) 3, 6, 10, 11 9, 12, 4, 5
Moon (Candra) 1, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11 5, 9, 12, 2, 4, 8
Mars (Maṅgala) 3, 6, 11 12, 9, 5
Mercury (Budha) 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11 5, 3, 9, 1, 8, 12
Jupiter (Guru) 2, 5, 7, 9, 11 12, 4, 3, 10, 8
Venus (Śukra) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 12 8, 7, 1, 10, 9, 5, 11, 3, 6
Saturn (Śani) 3, 6, 11 12, 9, 5
Rāhu 3, 6, 11 12, 9, 5

Notes. (1) Father–son pairs (Sun–Saturn; Moon–Mercury) do not cause vedha to each other. (2) Vedha can block good and bad results: e.g., Sun’s 3rd-house transit is benefic but is blocked if another planet (except Saturn) occupies the 9th; conversely, bad results of Sun in the 9th can be blocked if another planet (except Saturn) occupies the 3rd.
