In Vedic astrology, the calculation of Āyurdaya (longevity or life span) is a specialized and intricate area. While sages emphasized that exact life expectancy is ultimately governed by divine law and karma, they nonetheless provided mathematical methods to estimate whether a person falls under short life (Alpayu), medium life (Madhyayu), or full life (Pūrṇāyu). These methods, though elaborate, are often used with caution and cross-verified with planetary periods (daśās) and māraka (death-inflicting) factors.

Categories of Life Span

  • Bālarishta: Up to 8 years; survival depends on the cancellation of early death combinations.
  • Yogarishṭa: 8–20 years; a sensitive span requiring fine judgment.
  • Alpayu: Short life, up to 32 years.
  • Madhyayu: Medium span, around 32–70 years (sometimes taken as up to 66).
  • Pūrṇāyu: Full span, 70–100 years.

Major Mathematical Methods

The classical texts describe three principal systems of calculating longevity: Pindāyu, Aṃśāyu, and Niṣargāyu. Each evaluates the contribution of planets and ascendant in different ways.

1. Pindāyu Method

In this system, each of the seven visible planets contributes a fixed number of years at its maximum strength (exaltation), and half at its weakest (debilitation). For example:

  • Sun – 19 years
  • Moon – 25 years
  • Mars – 15 years
  • Mercury – 12 years
  • Jupiter – 15 years
  • Venus – 21 years
  • Saturn – 20 years

The exact years contributed are proportional to the planet’s position between debilitation and exaltation. This forms the arc of longevity.

2. Aṃśāyu Method

This method converts the longitudes of planets and ascendant into minutes and divides by 200. The resulting quotient gives the years each planet or the lagna contributes. Additional rules of bharaṇas (additions) and haraṇas (reductions) are then applied:

  • Bharaṇas (Additions): Planets in exaltation, retrogression, or strong divisional dignity may have their years doubled or trebled.
  • Haraṇas (Reductions): Planets combust, in enemy signs, or in weak houses may lose part of their contribution.

For instance, a combust Mercury may lose half its years, whereas Jupiter in retrogression may triple its contribution.

3. Niṣargāyu Method

Here, a natural order of planetary years is assigned from birth onwards, regardless of position. The sequence is:

  • Moon – 1 year
  • Mars – 2 years
  • Mercury – 9 years
  • Venus – 20 years
  • Jupiter – 18 years
  • Sun – 20 years
  • Saturn – 50 years

The total adds up to 120 years, symbolizing the maximum human life span in Vedic tradition.

Haraṇas (Reductions)

After initial calculation, reductions are applied to account for planetary weakness:

  • Astaṅgata Haraṇa: Due to combustion by the Sun.
  • Śatru-kṣetra Haraṇa: Planet in an enemy’s sign loses one-third of its years.
  • Chakrapāta Haraṇa: Planets in houses 7–12 lose varying fractions depending on placement.
  • Krurodaya Haraṇa: Lagna occupied by malefics reduces longevity (some traditions apply this).

Balancing the Three Methods

Classical texts advise that the astrologer should:

  • Apply all three methods (Pindāyu, Aṃśāyu, Niṣargāyu).
  • Compare results: whichever aligns with the strongest among lagna, Sun, or Moon should be considered final:
    • If lagna is strongest → use Aṃśāyu.
    • If Sun is strongest → use Pindāyu.
    • If Moon is strongest → use Niṣargāyu.

Cautions

The sages repeatedly caution that longevity calculations are approximate. Exact prediction of death is discouraged. Instead, astrologers use these methods to broadly assess whether a person is likely to enjoy short, medium, or full life, and then correlate it with daśās and maraka influences. Judgment must be exercised with humility.
