Bālariṣṭa and Ariṣṭa-bhaṅga
Scope. This article explains (i) what combinations indicate affliction in early life (bālariṣṭa), (ii) how such afflictions are cancelled (ariṣṭa-bhaṅga), (iii) the core principles behind diagnosing these, and (iv) the classical combinations (yogas) associated with both phenomena. It also outlines cautions on interpretation and why predictions for children under twelve are specially qualified.
1) Overview and definitions
Bālariṣṭa literally means “calamity in childhood.” Classical texts often state such yogas cause untimely death; however, Dr. Charak emphasises that these must not be read literally as “certain death.” Instead, treat them as indicators of affliction or vulnerability in health; death arises only when affliction is very intense and protective factors are lacking.
2) Why predictions are limited before age twelve
Classics caution that lifespan assessment is generally unreliable up to age twelve. Suffering or death in early years can be due to karmic entanglements not fully visible in the child’s chart: up to age 4 from the mother’s pāpa-karma, ages 4–8 from the father’s, and ages 8–12 from the child’s own past actions. This section foregrounds (a) the law of cause-and-effect (karma), (b) reincarnation, and (c) inter-related destinies within a family. Practically, astrologers are advised not to make definitive predictions for children under twelve, though the chart may be examined for bālariṣṭa and remedials.
3) What is ariṣṭa-bhaṅga (cancellation)?
Ariṣṭa-bhaṅga means cancellation/neutralisation of affliction. If bālariṣṭa is a missile, ariṣṭa-bhaṅga is the anti-missile: in its presence, affliction is mitigated. Importantly, cancellation presupposes the affliction exists; outcomes depend on how complete the cancellation is—often it brings qualitative improvement rather than full neutralisation. Classical texts sometimes over-praise such combinations; in practice, interpret judiciously.
4) Core astrological principles
- Moon’s condition (Candra). An afflicted/ill-placed Moon is a prime factor in bālariṣṭa unless adequately neutralised.
- Lagna and lagna-lord strength. Strong lagna and its lord indicate resilience; weakness under malefic influence harms health.
- Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10). Benefics in kendras support health; malefics in kendras (especially piling on the 1/7 axis) are adverse.
- 8th house and 8th-lord. Benefic influence on the 8th/its lord supports longevity; malefic concentration hurts—exception: Saturn in the 8th can ensure good health and long life.
- Dashā and transit interplay. Even “death-timed” dicta in classics must be tied to operational dashā/transits; dormant afflictions often manifest only when appropriate periods/transits activate them.
5) Classical combinations for bālariṣṭa
Important: The language below preserves classical phrasing (e.g., “death within…”). In modern practice, read these as degrees of affliction or risk, not certainties; integrate with strength/cancellation, dashā/transit, and context.
- Moon in 6/8/12 aspected by malefics → death soon after birth; only benefic aspects → in 8 years; mixed aspects → within 4 years; if unaspected → no affliction.
- Retrograde benefics in 6/8/12 aspected by malefics act like the above Moon; benefics in 6/8 aspected by retrograde malefic and unaspected by benefics → within 1 month; lagna without benefic aspect → within 1 month (very general).
- Birth at sunrise/sunset in Moon’s Horā or in Gandānta, with Moon + malefics in kendras → death; especially if evening birth in Moon’s Horā with malefics at rāśyānta associated with Moon in a kendra.
- Lagna-lord defeated in planetary war by a malefic and posited in 7th → within 1 month.
- Moon and all malefics in quadrants → death; variants include weak Moon in lagna + malefics in kendras and 8th; or Moon conjoined malefics and unaspected by benefics in lagna/7/8/12; or weak Moon in signs other than Meṣa/Vṛṣa/Karkaṭa in lagna aspected by malefics → soon after birth.
- Weak Moon aspected by Saturn, or hemmed by/associated with malefics → within 8 years; if Moon is in or aspected by Jupiter, longevity results (a noted exception to common “Moon-Jupiter infancy risk” beliefs).
- Afflicted Moon in 6/8/12 aspected by Saturn or Mars with malefics in 5/7/9 unalleviated by benefics → early death.
- Malefics in 6/8/12, Moon among malefics (all hemmed by malefics), and Jupiter retrograde in 6/8/12 → within one week; benefic aspects reduce potency.
- Retrograde Saturn in Meṣa or Vṛścika in 6th/8th or in a kendra, aspected by strong Mars → within 2 years.
- Rāhu in 7th aspected by unafflicted Saturn and Mars, and hemmed by malefics → within 1 month.
- Sun and Moon in 12th aspected by malefics; lagna and Jupiter in dusthānas/aspected by malefics → within 6 months.
- Rāhu in 6th with weak Moon receiving malefic aspect, and Mars in 8th → within days of birth.
- Malefic in lagna + weak Moon aspected by Saturn → within 6 months.
- Moon in lagna with malefics on both sides and a malefic aspect → after 12 months.
- Powerful malefics in 12th and 8th with Rāhu in 7th → within 1 month.
- Malefics in lagna and 12th, with powerful malefics in 2nd and 8th → within 1 month.
- Malefics in 12th and lagna; Sun and Moon in 2nd and 8th → within 15 days.
- 12th-1st-2nd occupied by powerful malefics; Moon hemmed between malefics; 8th-lord weak or under malefic aspect → within 4 months.
- Weak Moon in kendra from Sun and aspected by malefics → diseased limb/organ; benefic aspects to Sun/Moon avert.
- Sun, Mars & Saturn in lagna and weak Moon in 6th/7th under Jupiter’s aspect → in 7 years (note on vakrī/retrogression included).
- Malefic lagna-lord in Moon’s navāṃśa, in 12th from the Moon and aspected by malefics → in 9 years.
- Benefics in visible half and malefics in invisible half with Rāhu in lagna → in 5 years (cf. note on Vajra-muṣṭi under comb. 6).
- Rāhu in 7th aspected by Sun and Moon, and unaspected by benefics → in 12 years.
General note: Past/present merit can mitigate adverse outcomes.
6) Afflictions involving mother and father
Affliction to Mother
- Saturn in 10th, Moon in 6th, Mars in 7th → death of newborn along with mother.
- Moon hemmed by malefics in lagna with malefics in 7th/8th → death of native with mother.
- Moon aspected by three malefics → mother’s death (benefic aspects relieve).
- Moon in 7th/8th from a malefic, associated with a malefic, and aspected by a strong malefic → death of mother.
- Exalted or debilitated Sun in 7th → deprivation of mother’s milk (child nourished otherwise).
- Malefics in 1st, 2nd, 12th, 7th → destruction of family.
- Malefics in 5th/9th from a weak Moon → mother’s death within six months of birth.
- Birth at eclipse; Moon with malefics in lagna and Mars in 8th → death of native with mother (by weapon/surgical instrument).
Affliction to Father
- Saturn in lagna, Mars in 7th, Moon in 6th → father’s death.
- Jupiter in lagna; Sun, Saturn, Mars, Mercury in 2nd → father dies at the native’s marriage.
- Sun afflicted/hemmed by malefics and malefic(s) in 7th from Sun → father’s death.
- Mars in 10th in inimical sign → father’s death.
- Sun in Mars’ navāṃśa aspected by Saturn → father leaves home or dies before native’s birth.
- Rāhu + Jupiter in lagna/4th/6th → father dies in native’s 23rd year.
- Sun associated/aspected by malefics or hemmed by malefics → father suffers (incl. death).
- Affliction to 6th and 8th from Sun by malefics without benefic aspect → affliction to father (analogous logic for mother via Moon).
7) Timing: When ariṣṭa fructifies
Though some dicta attach precise ages to combinations, realisation of affliction typically follows operating dashā/sub-periods combined with adverse transits. In practice, latent bālariṣṭa may surface later in life when an appropriate period triggers the afflicted significations.
8) Classical combinations for ariṣṭa-bhaṅga
Apply these judiciously and always alongside period/transit analysis.
- Strong Jupiter in lagna nullifies evils (classically the most potent single protector).
- Any of strong Mercury/Jupiter/Venus in a kendra (1/4/7/10) destroys affliction.
- Strong lagna-lord in a kendra removes afflictions.
- Lagna-lord strong, unaspected by malefics and aspected by benefics in kendras → long life and improving prosperity.
- Moon in 6th/8th protects when birth is by day in Kṛṣṇa-pakṣa or by night in Śukla-pakṣa (phase-dependent safeguard).
- All planets rising in Śīrṣodaya signs (Mithuna, Siṃha, Kanyā, Tulā, Vṛścika, Kumbha) remove affliction.
- Rāhu in 3rd/6th/11th aspected by a benefic; or Rāhu in Meṣa/Vṛṣa/Karkaṭa coinciding with lagna → ariṣṭa vanishes.
- Malefics placed in benefic vargas and aspected by benefics who themselves occupy benefic vargas → afflictions disappear.
- Benefic rising sign, strong benefics, weak malefics → afflictions tend to disappear.
- Moon in 6th/8th but in Mercury/Jupiter/Venus drekkāṇa → ariṣṭas disappear.
- Malefics enclosed by benefics, with benefics in kendras/trikoṇas → cancellation.
- Lagna-lord in lagna aspected by all planets, or a full Moon aspected by all planets → cancellation.
- Benefics in 6/7/8 untainted by malefics (Lagnādhi-like yoga) → strong protection.
9) How to apply (step-by-step for beginners)
- Check the Moon. Is Candra afflicted (malefic aspects/conjunctions, dusthāna placement, hemming)? If yes, note severity.
- Assess vitality. Judge lagna and its lord’s strength/dignity/aspects; scan kendras for benefics vs malefics.
- Examine the 8th house. Is there benefic support or harmful concentration? Remember Saturn-in-8th exception.
- Identify classical yogas. Map present bālariṣṭa combinations (Section 5) and any ariṣṭa-bhaṅga (Section 8).
- Time carefully. Correlate with operating mahādashā/antardashā and current transits before concluding about manifestation.
- Temper the literal. Treat “death-timed” dicta as risk indices; weigh cancellations and strengths before pronouncing outcomes.
- Children & ethics. For natives under 12, avoid definitive fate statements; focus on vigilance and supportive measures.
