Prashna (Horary Astrology) in Vedic Astrology

Prashna (from Sanskrit: praśna, “question”) is a distinctive branch of Vedic astrology that provides answers to specific queries without requiring the birth chart of the querist. Instead, it relies on the precise moment a question is asked, and a horoscopic chart is erected for that instant. This chart is then analyzed using astrological principles to yield insights related to the question.

Historical Background

Prashna is considered to have the blessings of the ancient sage Paraśurāma. In South India, especially in Kerala, Prashna developed into a highly sophisticated system, codified in the classical text Prashna Mārga. Elsewhere in India, the system was shaped by the Shatapanchāśikā of Prithuyashas, son of the famous astrologer Varāhamihira. Over time, principles from the Tājika (Perso-Arabic influenced) system of annual horoscopy (Varṣaphala) were also incorporated, and Tājika yogas are sometimes applied in Prashna charts today.

Core Principles

Prashna focuses on answering specific questions about theft, litigation, disease, missing persons, travel, accidents, survival, success or failure, and many other concerns. Since it is not intended for long-range forecasting, it is best used for immediate, well-defined problems.

Importance of the Lagna

The lagna (ascendant) at the time of the query is of paramount importance:

• Chara (movable) rashi: Indicates change. For a patient, health will change (for better or worse); for a job, change of status or place; for a missing person, instability or movement.
• Sthira (fixed) rashi: Indicates stability. Conditions remain static—illness continues, jobs do not change, missing persons stay in the same place.
• Dwisvabhāva (dual) rashi: First half behaves like fixed signs, second half like movable signs.

Multiple Queries

If several questions are asked at once, tradition prescribes that answers be judged sequentially from different reference points:

1. First question — from the Lagna
2. Second question — from the Moon
3. Third question — from the Sun
4. Fourth question — from Jupiter
5. Fifth question — from the stronger of Mercury or Venus

Role of Kendras (Angular Houses)

The four kendras (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th houses) are especially important in Prashna:

• 1st house: Change or disturbance of one’s position; represents the querist in general.
• 4th house: Success, prosperity, medicine (in health queries), and well-being of travellers.
• 7th house: Return from journeys, opponents in litigation, the thief in theft questions.
• 10th house: Absence from home, patient in medical queries, authority (e.g., police or courts).

Favourable Indications

• Houses aspected or occupied by their lords or by benefics prosper.
• Benefics in lagna or in Sheershodaya signs (Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius) favor success.
• Fixed signs rising are good for stable matters (land, marriage, property).
• Movable signs rising are good for matters involving change (travel, recovery, transfers).
• If the lagna lord (lagneśa) and the lord of the relevant house (kāryeśa) are strong, mutually related, or aspect each other, the query is likely to succeed.

Sample Applications

• Health: Physician = Lagna, Patient = 10th house, Disease = 7th, Medicine = 4th. Benefics in kendras/trikonas and the Moon in an upachaya indicate cure.
• Missing person/travel: Querist = Lagna, Return = 7th, Absence = 10th, Well-being = 4th.
• Theft: Querist = Lagna, Thief = 7th, Stolen property = 4th, Authorities = 10th. A fixed lagna often indicates theft by a family member.
• Litigation: Querist = Lagna, Opponent = 7th, Authority = 10th, Judgement = 4th.

Ethical Concerns

Sometimes, querists may ask insincere questions to test or mock the astrologer. Classical texts suggest planetary combinations that help identify honesty or deceit in the querist. For example, benefics in the lagna suggest sincerity, while malefics indicate crookedness. Cross-aspects involving the 7th lord also reveal the querist’s intentions.

Strengths and Limitations

Prashna is valued for being quick, reliable, and useful when birth details are unavailable. However, it is typically limited to specific, short-term issues and is not used for broad life predictions.
